Apple paid a whopping $ 6 billion in federal corporate income taxes, the company said in a statement relayed in a report by The New York Times.
The report in question concerns the soon-to-be-concluded congressional inquiry into certain accounting methods of Apple and other technology companies.
Specifically, these methods are said to be practiced by these companies in order to allocate profits overseas, thereby avoiding high domestic taxes in the U.S.
Apple, in particular, had been placed under close scrutiny. This was on account of its having found legal ways to allocate as much as 70 percent of its profits offshore, where taxes are considerably lower.
But Apple said that it is “one of the top corporate income taxpayers in the country, if not the largest.”
As though to emphasize its point, Apple stated that it paid $ 6 billion in federal income taxes in fiscal 2012.
It added that the amount is equivalent to “1 out of every 40 dollars in corporate income taxes collected by the U.S. government.” That’s a sizable 2.5 percent of the total income tax collected from U.S. corporations last year.
Interestingly, Apple was one of the first companies in the 1980s to use a tax avoidance strategy known as the “Double Irish With a Dutch Sandwich.” This strategy, which has since been adopted by other large companies, minimizes taxes by allocating profits to the Caribbean via Irish affiliates and the Netherlands.

Every week, our staff will handpick a game from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These games will always be from a wide variety of genres, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and can’t quite put it down. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy, and happy gaming!
Lili
Get ready for a totally unique gaming experience on your new iPhone 5 or iPad with our Game of the Week.
Our Game of the Week is the brand new adventure from Bitmonster, which was featured on stage at Apple’s iPhone 5 keynote. Coming from six guys working in a basement, this is quite a feat indeed.
The game stars a nerdier Lara Croft character, named Lili. There isn’t any combat in Lili, so you don’t have to worry about any of that stuff. Instead, the game is filled with exploration and puzzle solving.
Lili is on a quest for flowers, since she is working on a vegi-magical degree. Quests will consist of various tasks, such as finding specific flowers or even other items, per the request of lovely robotic townspeople, who want to get rid of mean spirits. These spirits will also carry some of the best flowers in the game, so even though there’s no fighting, you can chase them down, leap on them, and get what you need. Different colored flowers will grow on spirits, so you’ll need to make sure you get the correct ones.
Controls are easy to understand as well: just tap once on the screen to move Lili forward, and steer her by moving your finger around. She can also run with a double tap. These simple controls make playing the game an absolute joy.
You will earn levels as you gather flowers, which allow you to improve three stats: run speed, grip, and stealthiness. This RPG element will definitely keep you hooked, along with the challenging puzzles.
We are rather impressed with Lili, and we’re sure that you’ll fall in love with it too. The game is already optimized for the iPhone 5’s large screen, so make sure you give your new toy a test drive with this gorgeous game.
Our Honorable Mention this week should appeal to fans of Rayman. In Rayman Jungle Run, you’ll be controlling everyone’s favorite platforming hero across 40 levels of platforming fun. The game is powered by the UbiArt Framework engine, which is the same engine that brought you Rayman Origins.
In Jungle Run, there are four different areas that you will go through, each with its own special mechanic: Jump, Fly, Wall Run, and Punch. You will run through and collect all of the dragonfly creatures and gold tokens. If you manage to get them all, you’ll earn a “tooth” of the dead, which will eventually unlock the Land of the Livid Dead levels.
Controls are extremely simple: there’s just one button to perform the mechanic used. Rayman will run automatically, so it’s all about the timing of your jumps, flying, and punches.
The game features Retina-optimized graphics and a fun soundtrack. Any platformer or Rayman fan should definitely give this game a try. It’s only $ 2.99 in the App Store for your iPhone and iPad.

Every week, our staff will handpick an app from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These apps will always be from various categories, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and have been using them daily. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy!
Pinterest for iPad
Now you can pin to your heart’s content with our App of the Week!
The latest update to the Pinterest app finally added iPad compatibility, so now you can Pinterest all you want from the comfort of your iPad! If you weren’t a member of Pinterest because you didn’t get an invite before, don’t worry — they opened up signups to the public earlier this month.
With the all new Pinterest for iPad, you’ll have a gorgeous interface for browsing all of your boards and pins, as well as those that belong to your friends. Infinitely browse as the app auto-loads new pins as you reach the bottom.
The app features a side panel navigational menu, so you can switch views at any time. Pinterest allows you to view people your following, search for keywords, or you can even browse through pins in specific categories. You can even access your own profile.
Another bonus of using Pinterest on your iPad is the fact that it comes with a built-in browser with a “Pin It” button, so you no longer need to use a third party app just for that purpose. This native integration is certainly welcome for all pinners.
If you are without an iPad, don’t fret, as the developers didn’t forget about the iPhone version of the app. Some improvements have been made to the iPhone version, such as better usability and a new two-column layout that allows you to see more pins on a single screen.
We have several frequent Pinterest users on our staff, and they have been welcoming this update with open arms! So make sure to check out the beautiful app for yourself, as it’s completely free!
Are you thankful for what you have in your life everyday? With Gratitude 365, it’s easy to keep track.
In this pretty little app, you are able to jot down a bullet point list of all the things that you are grateful for on any given day. The app allows you to view a list of days that you’ve recorded something, all the things that you wrote for a day, or you can see how many days in the month you have jotted down some thanks.
Since photographs go along with what you are thankful for, the app allows you to attach one photograph for each day. Hopefully a future version allows multiple photos to be attached, but for now, it’s just limited to one.
Your entries can be shared via Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, or email in those moments when you want to let someone know you are appreciative of them.
For privacy, you can add a passcode lock to the app from the settings. New images that are captured within the app can be saved to your Camera Roll, and you can also backup and restore your data or export it via iTunes File Sharing. Hopefully more options are added in the future, such as Dropbox or iCloud syncing.
For now, Gratitude 365 remains a decent app that is worth keeping your eye out on for future improvements, but it is not the only gratitude journal app out there. But we felt that it was a noteworthy new app release from the past week, thus earning the Honorable Mention spot.
